EU Commission Probing Oracle-Sun Merger
The European Commission is digging deeper into its anti-trust investigation of Oracle's takeover of Sun Microsystems. The $7.4 billion merger would bring together two major database systems competitors. Oracle offers many enterprise-grade software management systems and is known for both its databases and PeopleSoft product. Sun Microsystems is the owner of the open source RDBMS MySQL and famous for its development of the Java programming language.
In a statement issued Thursday, Oracle acknowledged the Commission had extended its probe but provided no specific commentary on the decision. The statement also noted that the U.S. Department of Justice and Sun shareholders have already approved the merger.
